5 Styling Tips for Plus Size Apple Shape Outfits
Hello, my apple-shaped Fly Friends! I’m sharing all of my tips and tricks to navigating off-the-rack fashion to find the best fit for your apple-shaped bod! When your waist or legs are smaller than your middle, finding the right fit can be tricky, but brands are slowly catching on to our wants and needs. Check out my styling tips for creating apple shape outfits.
1. Check Your Denim Fit – Apple Shape Outfits
Eloquii is the perfect example of this! They offer their denim in different styles to give a better fit to more body types. The Viola Fit is designed for a body shape with hip measurements 1-2 sizes bigger than waist and bust. I wear the Viola Fit from Eloquii and they are my favorite jeans, hands down! The Gena Fit is designed exclusively for a body shape with a fuller mid-section and more narrow hips and thighs.
2. Know and Check Your Meaurements
I know that measurements can be triggering to plus size babes, so you can skip this tip if it makes you uncomfortable! You can always buy and try things on until you find your perfect fit for apple shape outfits! But if you’re okay with knowing your measurements, it can really help when trying to find the right fit, especially shopping online! It’s even harder for us as plus size people to find clothing that fits properly because so many of our options are online only.
Universal Standard is not only one of the most size inclusive retailers out there, but they offer tons of educational tools to help you find your perfect fit beyond their own pieces. Here’s a guide for how to measure yourself, an option to book a 1:1 virtual styling appointment, and their “fit finder” that you can see next to every item they offer in addition to their size chart!
Check out the size chart for every brand that you shop, and not only to see your number size! Depending on which size fits your measurements best, you may not be your normal size for that brand’s size chart. Remember that sizing is 100% made up, totally not real at all! It’s just a tool to help us find the best fit for us at each brand, and each sizing technique is completely brand specific. I can wear up to 4 different sizes depending on the brand!
3. Buy Separates
Apple shape outfits with the perfect fit are often a different size on the top than on the bottom! For this reason, look for matching sets and swimwear that are sold as separates. That way you can get a different top and bottom size. Fashion to Figure always sells their matching sets that make you feel like a baddie with separate listings for the top and bottom. So does Rebdolls, which goes up to a 5X! For swimwear separates I recommend ASOS, Modcloth, and Target!
4. Try Slip-Free Dresses Apple Shape Outfits
Have you ever fallen in love with a dress that looks like an apple shape dream only to be disappointed to find that it has a slip underneath that feels 2 sizes smaller than the size you ordered? Me too, Fly Friends, me too. I try to avoid dresses with slips as much as I can. For some reason, brands like to add in a squeezy slip to their gorgeous flowy dresses, and it is beyond me! I want the flowing feel that I see in the photo, not to be secretly uncomfortable underneath. We’ve all cut a slip in our day to give those dresses the fit they advertised, but we shouldn’t have to! Here are 4 slip-free dresses for you to try!

5. It All Starts with the Undies
Every outfit you put together starts with the undies. Unless you’re going commando and in that case, I salute you! The worst for apple shape babes is when you’re feeling yourself in an outfit and then your undies start to fall down. If you wear high-waisted underwear, you know what I mean! My favorite places to buy high-waisted underwear that stays in place are Panty Drop, Torrid, Me Undies, and Cacique. Every outfit starts with undies, and it’s amazing what having a solid and comfortable base layer can do for your outfit and your mood while putting an outfit together and wearing it all day long.
