Planning a fashion blogger photoshoot requires creativity, attention to detail, and organization. Whether you’re new to the fashion blogging world or a seasoned pro, having a streamlined approach can make your photoshoot a breeze while yielding stunning content for your blog and social media. In this guide on how to plan a fashion blogger photoshoot, I’ll walk you through the process of planning outfits, shooting photos and videos, and making the most out of your creative vision.

Step 1: Plan Your Outfits in Advance

Planning a Fashion Blogger Photoshoot

The night before your fashion blogger photoshoot, take time to plan and style your outfits. Lay each outfit out and consider which accessories, shoes, and additional elements will best complement it.

For a Valentine’s Day-themed shoot, I selected several outfits:

  • Pink Velvet Dress: This vibrant dress from Universal Standard paired perfectly with a pink fuzzy jacket, creating a glamorous Hollywood vibe. Initially, I considered magenta flats but ultimately chose my favorite wide-width pink boots for a cohesive look.
  • Bright Pink Dress with Lace Top: Layering a lace long-sleeve top from Torrid under the dress added a romantic touch suitable for the season’s chilly weather. Although I initially planned to wear a conversation-heart-themed headband, I switched to a simple bow in the back, which elevated the look.
  • Romantic Corset and Plaid Skirt: After some trial and error with darker corsets and skirts, I settled on a lighter plaid skirt paired with a red Kate Spade mailbox purse. Lug boots added an unexpected, punk-inspired twist to this romantic ensemble.

Don’t be afraid to experiment. If an outfit isn’t coming together, pivot to different accessories, shoes, or combinations until you’re satisfied.

Step 2: Select the Right Accessories

When planning a fashion blogger photoshoot, accessories can make or break an outfit. Think carefully about handbags, jewelry, and headwear. For my photoshoot, I used unique pieces like a handmade “Let Them Eat Cake” purse from Etsy and Valentine’s-themed items. Keep your accessories organized and ready to go for quick changes during the shoot.

Step 3: How to Choose a Photoshoot Location

Selecting a visually appealing and versatile location is essential for a successful fashion blogger photoshoot. For this session, we headed to Presidio Park, a beautiful spot with stunning architecture and varied backdrops.

Start by scouting locations with good lighting and interesting elements. Presidio’s archways and tree-lined paths provided excellent settings for capturing both wide shots and close-ups. Always take a test photo to frame your shot and adjust for lighting.

Step 4: Work with a Partner or Photographer

Having someone help you during your shoot is invaluable. My husband, Corey, played a key role in framing shots, providing feedback, and assisting with outfit changes. To speed up the process, I’d take a test photo of him to show exactly how I wanted the shot framed.

If you’re shooting solo, consider using a tripod and remote shutter release. However, having a partner allows for quicker adjustments and more creative angles.

Step 5: Capture Both Photos and Videos

Content versatility is essential for social media. Aim to capture both photos and videos of each outfit. Don’t forget to shoot a mix of far-away shots, close-ups, and candid moments. For this shoot, we incorporated drone footage, which added a dynamic element to the content.

Unfortunately, we forgot to capture video for one outfit but made up for it with plenty of footage for the others. Learning from mistakes and adapting is part of the process.

Step 6: Maximize Outfit Changes

Switching outfits efficiently is key to getting varied content from a single location. I kept the same pink boots on for multiple looks, which saved time. My husband also helped with quick changes, like buckling shoes and tying corsets.

Plan your outfit sequence strategically, starting with the most intricate looks first and transitioning to simpler outfits as the shoot progresses.

Step 7: Use Creative Poses and Angles

Experiment with different poses to add variety to your shots. For instance, I had Corey capture photos of me looking out at the scenery and flipping my skirt playfully. Seeing the initial shots allowed me to adjust and refine my poses.

Don’t be afraid to review the photos on-site and make adjustments. This saves time and ensures you get the best possible content.

Step 8: Wrap Up with a Casual Look

After completing the more styled outfits, I switched to a comfy, casual Valentine’s Day look with a simple top, leggings, and sneakers. This allowed us to continue exploring the area while capturing more relaxed content.

Step 9: Edit and Organize Your Content

Once the photoshoot is complete, it’s time to sort and edit your content. Organize your photos and videos by outfit and location. Use editing software to enhance colors, adjust lighting, and crop images as needed.

Step 10: Repurpose Content Across Platforms

A successful fashion blogger photoshoot provides content for multiple platforms. Create YouTube videos, Instagram Reels, blog posts, and TikTok clips. Don’t forget to share behind-the-scenes moments to engage your audience.
