Honest review of Nutrisense – My diabetes journey
Not too long ago I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. At the time it felt like the worst thing in the world, like I failed at being healthy. I have struggled with getting my PCOS and insulin resistance under control. I thought maybe there was something I could have and should have done differently to avoid diabetes. When I think back to that time in my life I remember that I would go to the doctor I’d be told to take Metformin and lose weight. I did it, over and over. I lost weight when I was told to but the issue is I would inevitably gain it all back plus some. It was that same old cycle of restriction and binging. Perhaps you have experienced it too?
So, when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I wasn’t sure what the move was. Do I “diet and exercise” again or is there something I can do differently this time? I wanted to find out if there was something I could do to lower my A1C and manage my blood sugar that wasn’t extreme and would be sustainable long-term. I set out to learn about my options and I stumbled upon CGMs (Continuous Glucose Monitors). CGMs are like stickers you keep on your arm that help you keep track of your blood glucose in real-time. Upon more research, I found the Nutrisense app!
Honest review of Nutrisense – How Nutrisense Works
The Nutrisense app is a powerful tool that allows you to track your daily activity to see how food, sleep, exercise and stress impact your glucose. It pairs CGM data with a personalized program that includes a nutritionist to work with one-on-one. I reached out to Nutrisense to see if we could partner together. They sent me some CGMs and allowed me to use their app on a gifted basis so I could get a feel for how it works. Now I get to share an honest review of Nutrisense and my experience with the app.
Something I did right away that was a total game-changer was logging my meals. My goal is not to track macros or calories so all I did was snap a photo of my meal and log the time that I ate it. I was able to see in real-time how my body was reacting. I would then review the data with my nutritionist to see what could have been causing my fluctuations and how to change my meals in the future to see less of a blood sugar spike.
The idea was to add and pair foods, not restrict. This was a very important framing for me since I have not responded well to food restrictions in the past, and I want to be able to stick to the changes I am making long-term. It has been such an important way to learn about my body and how to make sustainable changes that work for my lifestyle.
Salad and Pizza Round 1
As an example of how Nutrisense works, I had one meal that consisted of Caesar salad and pizza that got an “ok” score. I had a small serving of the salad first and then I had another serving of salad along with the pizza. I felt like I had done almost everything right and I should have gotten a better score for my meal.
A week later I gave it another try but with a twist. I had a big salad first but this time I used a yogurt-based ranch dressing. This time I even had 3 slices of pizza instead of 2. Lo and behold I got a score of 100 on the modified meal!
Salad and Pizza Round 2
I didn’t take anything away that made me feel deprived, and if anything I ended up eating more food the second time around. Learning to pair my foods and how to make small changes and actually *see* the progress has been so affirming. It’s totally different when your goal is all about numbers on a scale, you want to see quick results because you are doing SO much work, and surely you should see a payoff. Well, our bodies don’t always work like that, but if you tap into a different metric – blood sugar – you can see your decisions make a difference right away.
I have also seen a difference in my blood sugar when I do physical activity. I am not talking about anything crazy either, just a 10-minute walk in the morning. I notice my body is much more accepting of the food I eat when I have made a point to get more movement in my day.
The cool thing, but sometimes frustrating thing, is that we are all different. Our bodies will all have different levels of carb tolerance and react differently to certain foods. This is why having a nutritionist to help you decode the Nutrisense data is vital! Your nutritionist can help walk you through your meals and suggest small changes to help you level out your blood sugar. I have absolutely loved my sessions with my nutritionist and she has made understanding my sugar spikes much easier!
