2022 is almost here, Fly Friends! I can’t believe it’s already a new year! Are you a yearly goal or resolution person? I love the idea of resolutions, but there is definitely a specific frame of mind involved in making them work for you in the most realistic way possible! Long story short, don’t put too much pressure on yourself, and don’t be too hard on yourself if something doesn’t work out. Combine this mindset with choosing realistic goals for yourself and you’ll be good to go!

If you aren’t a yearly goal person but you’d like to be, here are some ideas to get you started!

What to Ditch in the New Year

I love finding toxic habits, people, ways of thinking, and situations to let go of in the new year! Curating your own experiences to create the life that you want is so important. Great things to let go of include but are not limited to: Your ex who won’t stop texting you, the “friend” who only calls to talk about themselves or if they need a ride to the airport, a family member whose morals and values do not align with your own, anyone who brings you physical or emotional abuse, any social media platform that is no longer serving you, diet culture, and negative self-talk.

Basically, anything that does not bring you joy, you can choose to ditch in the new year. Remember that it won’t be instant, and it could take the whole year to let these things go. Working on it is the most important part. Sometimes it makes it easier to ditch something toxic when you replace it with something you love or to combat it with something positive. For example, if you want to ditch negative self-talk in the new year, try calling yourself out internally when you talk shit on yourself and replace those thoughts by naming three things that make you awesome.

Self-Care Resolutions

I think everyone needs more self-care in their lives. Anything that brings you relaxation. If you love to read, you can download Goodreads and try to read a certain amount of books before the year is over. You can vow to take more bubble baths, do a face mask once a week, start a skincare routine, or take yourself out on a date once a month. If you’ve been feeling burnt out in 2021, these self-care resolutions are the ones for you.

You can also focus on mental health when starting self-care goals. Schedule a therapy appointment, start journaling to track your emotions, set boundaries in your life.

Body-Positive Goals

I find it helpful to be specific when it comes to body-positive goals. Instead of saying, I’m going to love my body this year, focus on a specific part of a specific thing you want to have your body do. You can focus on belly love for the year by looking in the mirror and saying affirmations, wearing more styles that show off your VBO (visible belly outline,) or giving your stomach special care when moisturizing every day.

You can focus on an action, like wearing the bathing suit you’ve always wanted, trying out crop tops, or going on a hike. Your body carries you everywhere you go and can do fun, amazing, and beautiful things if you let it!

Societal & Patriarchal

Are you ready to stick it to the man in the new year? I love these types of resolutions. They make you feel powerful and badass. These are things like refusing to let a coworker interrupt your presentation, not letting someone take credit for your idea or work that you’ve done, not hiding your tampon as if you’re smuggling something on your way to the bathroom, letting go of gender-based fashion and beauty ideals, and not saying “sorry” when you mean “excuse me,” or when a man bumps into you on the street and it’s 100% his fault.

These things seem small but mean so much. They bring strength and help you feel like you can conquer the world. These are seemingly little things that when you drop them you realize had a much bigger impact on your life than you originally thought.

Advocating/Activism

Whether you need to advocate for yourself more or stand up for others, this is a great type of goal for the new year. You can pledge a certain amount of money to an organization or mutual aid funds, volunteer at a local non-profit, start a community page or club, make supply packs to keep in your car and hand out to houseless members of your community, send letters and emails to people in governments or positions of power to create change, or stand up for yourself and your beliefs by engaging in your communities more.

These things are so important, and can make a huge difference in your life and the lives of others!

Career Goals for the New Year

Who else is making career moves in 2022? I know I am! Whether this means a career change, making your creative pursuits an official job, sharing your art with the world, outsourcing some work to give yourself a break, getting a brick and mortar location, launching merch (like me!), asking for a raise, upping your rates, expanding your knowledge by taking classes, leaving a toxic work environment, or whatever, you’ve got this!

Every year you should be making moves for yourself and upping your career game to reflect all of the hard work you’ve already put in and your new year’s worth of experience!

Adulting

Okay, this one can be boring but it is SO necessary. When is the last time you went to see the dentist? Are you still using your AOL email? Does your car need new tires, your budget need reworking, or your car desperately need to be detailed? Do you have a copy of your birth certificate? Now is the time! Make yourself a little “Adult Accomplishments” list so that you can check things off throughout the year.

These are things that we forget about easily! We only think about them at 3:00 am right before we go to bed and then we don’t remember them in the morning, but they still need to be done! Write them down and get to them whenever you have some extra time and are feeling spicy.
